“Wanneer u naar Koper vaart, verwacht Slovenië van alles een beetje te zien. Op korte afstand van de pier is het stadsplein met winkels, cafés, restaurants en kathedralen. Oude stad is iets dat u niet wilt missen tijdens uw cruise naar Koper, Slovenië. Dit kleine gebied is een wijk uit het Venetiaanse tijdperk met een kleine hoofdstraat die je rechtstreeks naar een prachtige kathedraal met een klokkentoren brengt. Speciale wijnen en lokale ambachten zijn te vinden in de oude binnenstad in leuke winkeltjes en markten. Deze stad heeft een geweldige mix van Sloveense en Italiaanse culturen, evenals een mix van deze talen. Het landschap hier is gewoon prachtig met de Adriatische Zee, bergen, huizen met rode daken en historische gebouwen. Hieronder hebben we een paar favoriete dingen om te doen op een rijtje gezet tijdens het varen naar Koper, Slovenië:
-Bezoek het regionale museum van Koper met exposities van archeologische vondsten, sculpturen en kunstwerken om meer te weten te komen over de rijke geschiedenis van de regio.
-Bekijk het prachtige Pretoriaanse paleis dat ooit de officiële residentie was van de gouverneur tijdens de tijd van de Venetiaanse Republiek.
-Proef enkele van de lokale gerechten met de mix van mediterrane en Italiaanse smaken die uitstekend samengaan met een lokaal wijnarrangement.
-Ontspan of zwem langs de kustlijn voor een zonovergoten dag.”

“De tweede grootste stad van Kroatië ademt nog steeds de charme van een kleine stad uit, dankzij zijn grillige, smalle straatjes en de relaxte levensstijl waar de Dalmatiërs om bekend staan.

Split is, met een drukke veerboothaven, het toegangspunt voor de vele eilanden langs de kust. Een groot deel van zijn oude stad ligt binnen de muren van het Paleis van Diocletianus, een 1.700 jaar oude vesting aan de Adriatische kust vermeld op de UNESCO-lijst. De Romeinse keizer Diocletianus bouwde het paleis als zijn rustoord aan de zee en door de eeuwen heen hebben vele veroveraars toevlucht gezocht binnen zijn dikke muren.

Vandaag de dag is Split een levendige stad met ongeveer 200.000 inwoners, en verdwalen in het doolhof van straatjes is de beste manier om het historische centrum te verkennen. Ontdek bij toeval levendige cafés en winkels die weggestopt zitten in het oude paleis of wat verder de drukke pleinen en markten, stille paden en prachtige stranden.”

Aan de Adriatische kust vind u de havenplaats Bari. De stad is opgedeeld in een oud en nieuw stadsdeel die beide veel te bieden hebben. Het oude gedeelte van deze universiteitsstad is in goede staat gebleven en heeft talrijke pleinen, kerken, een kasteel en een gezellig nachtleven. In het nieuwe gedeelte, met een opvallend rechthoekig straatpatroon, vind u het Archelogische museum en een geweldig winkelgedeelte. Bari is tevens de laatste rustplaats van Sint Nicolaas, die nu beschermheilige van de stad is. Vlakbij Bari kunt u druipsteenformaties in de Grotte Castellane gaan bekijken.

Calling all skywatchers, umbraphiles and astronomers! Extremely rare and very exciting, a full solar eclipse is a bucket list experience if ever there was one. Scheduled for 4th December, 2021 the next eclipse will take place only in Antarctica and we will be positioned in the small path of totality for maximum effect. This experience is not available for the average cruisers; imagine being surrounded by brilliant light one minute, then complete blackout the next, before enjoying the mysterious shadow-play as we wind back to the blinding white of Antarctica.

Watch how the curious wildlife will react to the eclipse, making sure to note their behaviour and let the onboard naturalist know. Other onboard expedition staff will share their insightful knowledge in order to help you gain a better understanding of this phenomenal phenomenon. As if a trip to the seventh continent was not special enough!

“De oude stad Valletta wemelt van de historische monumenten, kerken en tuinen. Met een oppervlak van minder dan één vierkante kilometer is de meest zuidelijk gelegen hoofdstad in Europa een van de makkelijkste om te voet te verkennen.

Gezien de strategische locatie van Malta en de opeenvolging van heersers, waaronder de Romeinen, de Noormannen, de Sicilianen, de Spanjaarden, de ridders van Sint John, de Fransen en de Britten, is het verbazingwekkend dat Valletta in al die tijd nog zo goed bewaard is gebleven. De stad dateert uit de 16e eeuw en staat sinds 1980 op de lijst van Werelderfgoed van UNESCO. Er worden uitgebreide restauraties uitgevoerd aan historische gebouwen. Dit omvat onder andere de heropbouw van de stadsentree, als voorbereiding op de rol die Valetta in 2018 zal gaan spelen als Europese hoofdstad van cultuur.

Na decennia van Britse overheersing is naast de lokale Maltese taal het Engels ook nog steeds een officiële taal, in combinatie met een merkwaardig mengsel van een Italiaanse woordenschat en Semitische wortels. Omdat Malta maar 50 mijl ten zuiden van Sicilië ligt, zijn er vooral Italiaanse invloeden terug te vinden in de keuken en cultuur. De Maltezen waarderen ook hun eigen tradities, zoals hun volksmuziek Għana met poëtische mannenstemmen begeleid door langzame gitaarmuziek.”

The majestic, honey-coloured Greek theatre is a highlight, standing before the distant loom of the volcano. Head towards the puffs of cloud, and wisps of smoke, that gather around the peak of Sicily’s mighty volcano, which is among the most active in Europe. Arrive through vineyards, thriving in this fertile soil, before taking the 1,737-metre incline to the summit of the legendary mountain of fire, across fields of solidified lava flows. Known to the Greeks as the home of the God of Fire, and the one-eyed Cyclops, the mountain continues to amaze and awe with its restless power. Vineyards carpet the scenery – interrupted by occasional cactai and citrus groves – and produce some of Sicily’s most refined flavors. Enjoy a glass of wine on Giardini Naxos’ seafront, and toast your time on these rich Sicilian shores.
