Maar aankomen in de haven van Komodo – gelegen tussen de eilanden Sumbawa en Flores, in het oostelijk deel van de Indonesische archipel – voelt als aankomen op een heel andere planeet. De grootste trekpleister hier is, uiteraard, Komodo National Park, door UNESCO tot werelderfgoed uitgeroepen en een biossfeerreservaat sinds 1992. In het gebied leven ongeveer 5700 komodovaranen, die in feite hagedissen zijn, en een van de grootste hagedissen ter wereld, die een lengte bereiken van drie meter (bijna 10 voet).
