Na de sluiting onder de beruchte Argentijnse leider Juan Perón, werd de grote gevangenis opnieuw ingericht om een van de populairste musea van de stad te huisvesten. Andere hedendaagse bezienswaardigheden in de stad zijn onder andere een zeevaartmuseum en een museum gewijd aan de natuurlijke geschiedenis van de regio, maar ook restaurants die een uitzonderlijk gerecht bereiden, lokale koningskrab.”

Famous for its majestic landscapes, this narrow passage (only 5,249 feet wide!) between the mountains of Booth Island and the Antarctic Peninsula is so photogenic it is nicknamed the Kodak Gap. Here, snow-capped peaks and icebergs soar toward the heavens, their mirror images reflected in the still waters below to create breathtaking scenery. The channel is a haven for Weddell, crabeater and elephant seals, many making their home on Petermann Island where we hope to land, conditions allowing.

Pristine and picturesque, this harbor on the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula is famous for its awe-inspiring icebergs, glaciated mountains and gentoo penguins. Here we may launch Zodiac adventures in search of seals, penguins diving off ice floes and maybe even whales. There are two scientific research stations here, Argentina’s Almirante Brown Antarctic Base, and Chile’s González Videla Antarctic Base, the latter a designated Historic Site.

De onbewoonde eilandengroep Zuidelijke Shetlandeilanden liggen in de Scotiazee en de Zuidelijke Oceaan ongeveer 120 kilometer uit de kust van het Antarctisch Schiereiland en wordt hiervan gescheiden door de Straat van Bransfield. De eilandengroep vormt het zuidwestelijke uiteinde van de Scotiarug.
