“Denk aan Osaka (klemtoon op de O), Japan als een combinatie van Los Angeles en Chicago. Het heeft zeker de complexiteit van de tweede stad van L.A., maar de uitstraling is puur Chicago. Het enige dat telt is het bedrijfsleven, en wat maakt het uit als de Hanshin Tigers, het plaatselijke honkbalteam, vaak de slechtste professionele atleten ter wereld zijn? Het is de thuisploeg. De bevolking van Osaka lacht harder, speelt harder en drinkt meer dan in Tokyo’s meeste decadente dromen. Osaka heeft zelfs een eigen dialect, dat door de rest van het land “vuil Japans” wordt genoemd, helemaal anders dan die van Kobe’en Kobe is een voorstad van Osaka.
Niets is oud in Osaka. De plaats werd plat gebombardeerd in de oorlog (en daarna weer in 1962 en 1989, door Godzilla). Tijdens de wederopbouw vergaten ze ruimte in te plannen voor parken en groene plekken, en de enorme hoeveelheid beton en staal kan overweldigend zijn.
Maar Osaka heeft haar attracties en interessante dingen om te doen. Sumoworstelaars wachten op treinen, stinkend naar chanko-nabe (een traditionele sumomaaltijd, puur energie en calorieën), en dagen de officiële spoorwegduwers uit om hen te duwen. Yakuza (Japanse gangsters) eigenen zichzelf treinwagons toe, maar als u met hen kunt omgaan, lijkt het alsof u onzichtbaar bent. Drukke markten, het visuele geluid van neon en non-stop actie in de winkelstraten bieden inzicht in de energie en ambitie van Osaka.
En als dat alles nog niet genoeg is, ligt Osaka ook nog op minder dan een uur afstand van sommige van de mooiste tempels, altaren en oude Japanse toeristische attracties in de wereld, duizend jaar Japanse geschiedenis, die liggen te wachten in de oude hoofdsteden Kyoto en Nara.”

“Hiroshima, in het zuidwesten van Japan en de belangrijkste stad van de Chugoku regio, is gelegen in een buitengewoon natuurlijk landschap van bergen, zee en rivieren. Met meer dan één miljoen inwoners, is het bekend als de locatie waar ‘s werelds eerste atoombom ontplofte, afgeworpen door de V.S. in augustus 1945. Deze ramp is gevoelig gedocumenteerd in het Hiroshima Vredes- en Herinneringspark en het bijbehorende Hiroshima Vredes- en Herinneringsmuseum. De stad biedt bezoekers veel meer dan de tragedie van zijn recente verleden.

De stad is in twee stukken verdeeld door de rivier de Huangpu, met in het westen Puxi en in het oosten Pudong. “Te midden van de meest glamoureuze en kosmopolitische steden ligt Hongkong aan de zuidelijke kust van China aan de monding van de Parelrivier in de Zuid-Chinese Zee. Het bestaat uit Hongkong eiland, waar het zakelijke district en de meest rijke delen en bezienswaardigheden zich bevinden, en, op het vasteland, Kowloon en de Nieuwe Territoria. Hongkong is een regionaal en wereldwijd knooppunt voor bankieren, goederenvervoer, mode en voedsel, en heeft meer dan 60 Michelin-sterrenrestaurants. De vijfsterren hotels die men hier vindt, zijn de meest elegante; vele zijn gevestigd in grote wolkenkrabbers die de steile hellingen van Hongkong bekleden en de skyline zo mooi verlichten.
Hongkong, dat officieel de speciale administratieve regio van de Volksrepubliek China heet, heeft een grote hoeveelheid autonomie in vergelijking met de rest van China, zelfs nadat het herenigd werd met China in 1997 na 156 jaar Brits bestuur.
Veel cruises in Zuidoost- en Oost-Azië beginnen of eindigen in Hongkong, en het is zeker een geweldige stad om een dag of twee te bezichtigen en culturele activiteiten te ondernemen, voor of na uw reis.
