“Het grootste eiland van Thailand ligt op korte afstand van de westkust van het land, in de glinsterende Andamanse Zee. Thailand is nooit gekoloniseerd geweest maar de internationale handel bracht de Europeanen naar Phuket (spreek uit als ‘poo-ket’) in de 17e eeuw. Het eiland bevatte voorheen veel tin, hetgeen de Nederlandse, Franse, Engelse en Portugese handelaren aantrok. Hun invloed kan men het beste terugvinden in de oude binnenstad van Phuket, waar voormalige herenhuizen verbouwd zijn tot hotels, restaurants, cafés en winkels.

Een belangrijke bezienswaardigheid op Phuket, de Big Buddha, ligt op een berg met adembenemende uitzicht over de kust. Een uitstapje naar de Chalong Highlands biedt eveneens prachtige vergezichten, naast korte olifantentochtjes.
