Lautoka to Papeete

” Lautoka ligt niet op een logische plek om een van de drukste havens van Fiji te zijn. Havens bevinden zich meestal in baaien of zeehavens; hier is het gewoon het open Bligh Water (ja, die Bligh van wie de bemanning in Tahiti muiterij pleegde, en die daarna een van de grootste zeilprestaties in de geschiedenis neerzette, waardoor de overblijvende manschappen niet op het dagmenu van de kannibalen terechtkwamen).

Lautoka heeft een gezellige, langzaam verdwijnende koloniale sfeer met een100 jaar oude suikerfabriek die nog steeds in werking is. De Moslim moskeeën en Hindu tempels, naast elkaar gelegen in de stad, vatten de geschiedenis van de Fiji samen in een notendop. Indo-Fijiërs, waarvan de voorouders door de Britten van India werden overgebracht in de 19e eeuw als contractarbeiders, vergaarden na een tijdje voldoende macht om lokale winkels en land op te kopen. Wanneer de inheemse Fijiërs de verstoorde balans opmerkten leidde dit tot een coup, een tegencoup en, in 2006, een tegen-tegencoup. (Geen paniek: bezoekers zullen hier niets van merken. Democratische verkiezingen zijn weer van start gegaan en alles is koek en ei.)

Slechts 15 kilometer (negen mijl) van de gezellige alledaagse drukte ligt het Koroyanitu National Heritage Park. Dit park is een bijna magische uitzondering op wat er zich meestal afspeelt in het gebied van de Zuidelijke Stille Oceaan, want het bevat een volledig beschermd ongekapt nevelwoud. Wandel naar de bergtop en geniet van de eindeloze blauw-groene zichten op alle Fiji-eilanden die aan Europese ontdekkingsreizigers voorbijgingen vanwege van hun angst voor koppensnellers en kannibalen.”

” Levuka is een stad aan de zuidoostkust van het Fijische eiland Ovalau, in de provincie Lomaiviti, net buiten het hoofdeiland Viti Levu. Ovalau is een weelderig tropisch vulkanisch eiland omgeven door grote koraalriffen. Aan de noordkant van Levuka ligt het traditionele Fijische dorp Levuka, waar het dorpshoofd een directe afstammeling is van het opperhoofd dat de eerste Europese kolonisten verwelkomde.

Populaire activiteiten in Lavuka zijn onder meer een historische stadstour, een dagtocht naar Silana (10 km van Levuka) en een reis naar Lovoni in het centrum van Ovalau. Leleuvia is a small low-lying island southeast of Ovalau with a length of barely 500 meters. Situated between the chiefly island of Bau, Moturiki and Ovalau, almost equidistant from Ovalau and the Central Eastern coast of Viti Levu, this lush, green island hosts a small resort. An easily accessible reef with many colorful reef fish 10 meters off of Leleuvia’s western beach invites to be explored. Resident sea kraits are often seen resting ashore north of the small pier. Despite its small size and the resort on its southern side, the island still has quite an extensive forest of tamanu (Alexandrian laurel), lantern trees, fish-poison trees and beach gardenia. There are also local clusters of beach hibiscus, beach heliotrope and Pacific rosewood where Sacred Kingfishers, Orange-breasted Honeyeaters, and Pacific Swallows have been recorded.

Lomé is the capital of Togo, in West Africa. It’s known for its palm-lined Atlantic coastline. The central Independence Monument is in a landscaped traffic circle. The nearby Congressional Palace houses the National Museum, exhibiting West African jewelry, masks, musical instruments and pottery. To the northeast, the Akodésséwa Fetish Market sells voodoo items like animal skins and skulls. ― Google

As part of the Southern Lau Group, Fulanga is one of Fiji’s easternmost islands. Fulanga has a large central lagoon with a 50-meter wide pass to the ocean on its northeastern side. The crescent-shaped raised limestone island is famous for its numerous islands, mushroom-shaped islets and many sandy beaches in the calm lagoon. Some 400 residents live in three small villages.

The two villages of Muana-i-rai and Muana-i-cake are quite close together on the southern exterior side with a very narrow passage allowing access to the ocean, while Naividamu, the third village, is on the interior, i.e. lagoon side. Muana-i-cake is the main village and hosts the kindergarten and primary school, a post office and first aid station. Old-style houses made of corrugated iron are predominant with limited solar power for the odd refrigerator and television set. Although many islanders have left Fulanga to look for work in Suva, traditional crafts are still practiced by men and women. The weavers and carvers producing pandanus mats and wooden bowls for kava ceremonies are not only valued on Fulanga. Their products can leave on the monthly supply vessel and is highly sought after in Suva.

With a population of 6,000, Neiafu is the capital of the Vava’u Group and the second largest municipality in the Polynesian nation of Tonga (a 169-island archipelago in the South Pacific). The city is situated next to a deep- water harbor (Port of Refuge) on the south coast of Vava’u, the main island of the Vava’u archipelago in northern Tonga. The waters of this region are known for their clarity and beauty, and the area attracts many humpback whales between June and November. View less

A popular destination in Neiafu is the ‘Ene’io Botanical Garden, a bird sanctuary that promotes the survival of exotic and native bird species as well as supports and conserves a diverse array of plant life.

Niue, eens bekend als ‘Savage Island’ vanwege de onvriendelijke ontvangst die ontdekkingsreiziger kapitein Cook ten deel viel in 1774, is een klein eiland in de Zuid-Pacific bekend om zijn verhoogd koraalrif en zijn kleine hoofd ‘stad’ Alofi. U kunt het hele eiland, dat bedekt is met schilderachtige sporen van de zee die koraalriffen, grotten, kloven en regenwoud met elkaar verbinden, in een paar uur bestrijken, Niue heeft ook een goede verbinding met de rest van de wereld: de hele natie is een gratis Wi-Fi hotspot, maar u moet er rekening mee houden dat de aankomst van een cruiseschip en zijn vele passagiers die internet gebruiken de snelheid aanzienlijk kan vertragen. Kokosnoten en tropische vruchten vormen een hoofdbestanddeel in het dieet van Niue, en zelfs de steunpilaar van het lokale zeevoedsel uga betekent kokoskrab. Als uw bezoek aan het eiland op zondag valt, dan zult u merken dat vrijwel alles gesloten is vanwege kerkdiensten, maar u kunt naar het Washaway Café gaan, met de enige zelfservice bar in de Zuid-Pacific, en alleen op zondag geopend.

This experience is not available for the average cruisers; imagine being surrounded by brilliant light one minute, then complete blackout the next, before enjoying the mysterious shadow-play as we wind back to the blinding white of Antarctica.

Watch how the curious wildlife will react to the eclipse, making sure to note their behaviour and let the onboard naturalist know. Other onboard expedition staff will share their insightful knowledge in order to help you gain a better understanding of this phenomenal phenomenon. The low-lying atoll of Palmerston is inhabited by three families, all descendants of William Marsters (1831-1899). Members of the community are known to greet visitors and guide small boats and Zodiacs into the lagoon through a maze of coral reef to reach the only inhabited islet –commonly called “Home”. Once ashore, the whole community generally turns out to meet visitors as it is a rare occurrence. View less

The island’s highlights include a church, the oldest house, the cemetery, the school, the underground gardens and “Duke’s Pool,” inviting for a swim or snorkel. In the lagoon’s waters it is possible to find colorful reef-fish, sea cucumbers, rays, and sea turtles. Overhead there is birdlife including tropicbirds, boobies, noddies, frigatebirds and terns.

Incredible Aitutaki, inspiring Aitutaki, unbelievable, idyllic and unimaginable, there are simply not enough superlatives to describe quite how amazing Aitutaki is. Brought to light in 1779 by Captain Bligh, the Mutiny on the Bounty meant that Aitutaki has something of a bloodthirsty history.

While Europeans missionaries eventually settled on the island in the 19th century (evidenced by the white, coral-encrusted walls of the many churches) the island’s Polynesian history dates to around 900AD. Traditional songs and dances from this period still exist (although Christian hymns, known as “imene metua” are also popular), and are performed by islanders with gusto and much pride. The island is part of the Cook Islands, one of the most secluded and romantic archipelagos in the world. With its powder white sand, warm turquoise waters and sense of casual luxury, it is easy to see why the island has earnt itself the moniker of honeymooner’s island. However, there is much more to Aitutaki than just fun in the sun. With a reef that completely encompasses a large turquoise lagoon, Aitutaki is considered one of the most spectacular diving and snorkelling destinations in the world. Added to the tropical excitement is that when entering the main village via Zodiac along a narrow channel – travellers will be greeted by a traditional and customary warrior challenge.

Wanneer u Bora-Bora voor het eerst ziet wanneer het schip door Teavanui Pass vaart, valt uw mond open van verbazing. Schitterend blauw water met meer schakeringen dan u kunt tellen en motus (eilandjes) met wit zand en vol palmbomen omgeven het weelderige eiland, waar de grillige Mount Otemanu bovenuit torent. Sluit uw ogen en open ze weer. Ja, het is geen sprookje. Dit eiland in de Zuidelijke Stille Oceaan met haar exotische Tahitiaans-Franse allure fascineert echtparen op huwelijksreis en vakantiegangers al vanaf dat hier de eerste bungalows boven water werden gebouwd, bijna 50 jaar geleden. Al jarenlang trekt Bora-Bora ook vele duikers die graag de grote verscheidenheid aan rifvissen, roggen en haaien willen bekijken. Het is moeilijk om beter te doen dan het prachtige schouwspel van het water of dan Mount Otemanu, die er vanuit elke hoek anders uitziet. Vaitape, de grootste plaats van het eiland met een bevolking van ongeveer 5.000 mensen, doet zelfs geen moeite om het beter te doen. Er verandert niet veel in deze rustige haven, met een paar winkels waar zwarte parels worden verkocht, boetiekjes en galerieën rond een oude kerk en verschillende kleine cafeetjes. U wilt misschien wel een parel kopen en u moet zeker eens proeven van de poisson cru (rauwe vis gemarineerd in kokosmelk en limoensap). Maar om eerlijk te zijn, moet u op Bora-Bora langs de lagune zijn.

“Hoewel met Frans-Polynesië soms alleen maar Tahiti wordt bedoeld, is Tahiti slechts een van de eilanden, omringd door een rif dat het water een blauwe kleur geeft, zelfs een saffier is niet zo mooi blauw. Rivieren stromen naar beneden vanaf de hoge bergtoppen en iedere avond gaat de zon onder achter het naburige eiland Moorea, met een prachtig lichtspektakel op de bergen.

Papeete, de hoofdstad van Frans-Polynesië, is een bruisend zaken- en regeringscentrum, met op elke hoek winkeltjes waar u zwarte parels kunt kopen. Als u naar de landelijke omgeving gaat, gaat de tijd rustig voorbij en zijn er alleen nog de onveranderlijke oceaan en de vrijwel onveranderde bossen, en er is nog veel van de sfeer waardoor Cook dacht dat hij de hemel op aarde had gevonden.”
