Calling all skywatchers, umbraphiles and astronomers! Extremely rare and very exciting, a full solar eclipse is a bucket list experience if ever there was one. Scheduled for 4th December, 2021 the next eclipse will take place only in Antarctica and we will be positioned in the small path of totality for maximum effect. This experience is not available for the average cruisers; imagine being surrounded by brilliant light one minute, then complete blackout the next, before enjoying the mysterious shadow-play as we wind back to the blinding white of Antarctica.

Watch how the curious wildlife will react to the eclipse, making sure to note their behaviour and let the onboard naturalist know. Other onboard expedition staff will share their insightful knowledge in order to help you gain a better understanding of this phenomenal phenomenon. As if a trip to the seventh continent was not special enough!

Haast zodra u de haven van Kralendijk in gaat, realiseert u zich dat dit een van de meest gemoedelijke aanlegplaatsen is. Hoewel er een aantal kleurrijke straten is om door te wandelen naar de nabijgelegen resten van (meestal) Bonaire’s Nederlandse koloniale tijdperk, missen zelfs de drukste straten de drukte van andere Caraïbische hoofdsteden. Wat prima is. De betrekkelijke rust komt de grootste bezienswaardigheden van het eiland ten goede: legendarisch ongerepte wildernis, zowel boven als onder de oppervlakte; mangroven vol jonge vissen; en zoutvlakten vol flamingo’s. En riffen vol met… van alles. Hier stroomt de beker van de natuur over. En ook de uwe overigens (probeer zeker de cactuslikeur, ook als u geen van de andere lokale drankjes neemt). Er is ook een schandalig grote culturele rijkdom dankzij de verschillende indiaanse, Spaanse, Afrikaanse, Nederlandse en Britse invloeden op het eiland. U zult sporen van de talen horen van alle genoemde naties (plus een beetje Frans en Portugees) tijdens gesprekken in het Papiamento, de creoolse taal gesproken in de Nederlandse Antillen. U zult ontdekken dat u met zinnen als por fabor, danki en bon dia ver komt, omdat ze allemaal betekenen wat u denkt dat ze betekenen.

“Het door de wind geteisterde Nederlandse eiland Aruba, net buiten de kust van Venezuela, is buitenaards. Hier zijn de stranden spectaculair ongerept, de wateren zijn romantisch rusteloos, het binnenland van het eiland is maanachtig en gevuld met cactussen, en heel beroemd zijn de door de wind verwrongen bomen. De constante passaatwinden van het eiland maken onderdeel uit van de charme van de bestemming: Ze houden de luchtvochtigheid, regen en orkanen, iets wat veel vóórkomt in het laagseizoen in de Caribbean, op afstand.

De belangrijkste haven en de hoofdstad, Oranjestad, is een doolhof van Nederlandse koloniale architectuur geschilderd in een palet van Caribische pasteltinten. Er zijn enkele historische bezienswaardigheden van betekenis en talloze winkels, uiteenlopend van boetieks tot megastores, met allerhande souvenirs, en juwelen en goud als populaire items. Er werd hier goud gedolven in de 19e eeuw. In Oranjestad en langs de stranden vindt u ook een schat aan uitstekende visrestaurants, terwijl verder weg vuurtorens, goudmijnruïnes en natuurlijke wonderen de ruige aantrekkingskracht van Aruba weerspiegelen.”

“De hoofdstad van Curaçao, Willemstad, is bijna net zo oud als een beroemdere Nederlandse nederzetting en werd gesticht in 1634, slechts 10 jaar na Nieuw Amsterdam, later New York genoemd. Maar hoewel de heerschappij van de Nederlanders in Nieuw Amsterdam relatief kort was, blijft Curaçao tot op de dag van vandaag een deel van Nederland. Het historische centrum is een unieke mix van de Nederlandse bouwkunst en de pasteltinten van de Caribbean, de puntgevelhuizen met uitzicht op Sint Annabaai, een waterweg die de stad scheidt in twee delen en de Caribbean verbindt met de beschermde Schottegat Bay. Het hele historische centrum van Willemstad is door UNESCO erkend als werelderfgoed.

Terwijl de legendarische dagen van weleer van Willemstad verkend kunnen worden in instellingen zoals het Kura Hulanda en Curaçao Maritime Museum, is dit ook een bruisende levendige stad. Onder de hoogtepunten van deze multiculturele smeltkroes kan een stop vallen bij de drijvende markt en een bezoek aan een curaçaodistilleerderij om de beroemde lokale likeur te proeven. Natuurlijke wonderen wachten ook: enkele van de mooiste duik- en snorkellocaties van de Caribbean zijn hier te vinden. Tot slot kunt u met een maaltijd in Willemstad de diversiteit van het eiland ervaren door middel van de verrassende smaken van de keuken, die de Europese, Caribbean- en Zuid-Amerikaanse invloeden weerspiegelt.”

An almost mythical utopia of virgin beaches, rustic rum shacks and bays so scenic you feel like you’re intruding – Bequia Island is an island mirage of Caribbean perfection. This is the real, unspoiled experience – and with just 6,000 locals living here, you quickly start to recognise the same smiling faces, welcoming you with outstretched arms. Offering glorious – often deserted – beaches of pure golden sand, and hillside sweeps of forest and almond trees, Bequia Island is an extraordinary feast for the senses.

Unlike some of the flashier Caribbean islands, Bequia – a part of the Grenadines – is a rustic, unassuming and off-the-beaten-path choice. The staggeringly picturesque natural harbour, Admiralty Bay, greets you on arrival, and is peppered with day-tripping yachts bobbing on the gentle waves. The island’s tiny capital, Port Elizabeth, sits behind, with its bustling fruit and vegetable market, turtle sanctuary, and stalls selling hand-crafted model ships. This tiny, pretty island is ridged along the centre, and you can earn your beachside bliss with a gentle hike to the top of Mount Peggy, looking out over views of Grenada and St Vincent. At just seven miles long, you can discover the whole island in a few hours – but that would be to miss the point somewhat. Bequia Island coaxes you in to slow the pace and soothe your soul on blissful beaches, where you can revel in the uncomplicated joys of sitting, reading and swimming in heavenly shallow waters. The royally approved Princess Margaret Beach is one of the finest – an arching band of soft sand and cobalt-blue waters. As evening sets in, you may find you’re beckoned to share with communal barbecues of the day’s fresh catch with the locals, or to indulge in rum-heavy cocktails at beachside bars, lashed together from sea-blanched wooden limbs.

A faint aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and other spices lingers over Grenada’s fertile lands. Often called the “Spice Island”, Grenada has a lot more to offer than just spices. St. George’s, the picturesque, small capital with terraces of pale, colour-washed houses and cheerful red roofs, has long enjoyed the reputation of having the prettiest harbour in the Caribbean. Established in 1705 by French settlers, who called it Fort Royal, much of the town’s present-day charm results from the blend of two colonial cultures with a Caribbean atmosphere. The colonial heritage is reflected in remaining 18th-century French provincial houses and fine examples of English Georgian architecture. Around the island, the scenery is equally appealing: the mountainous interior rises from a generally rugged coast, which in part is blessed with dazzling white beaches. Due to its compact size, Grenada can be easily explored, even on just a one-day visit.
