Van ijsblauwe gletsjers tot beluga-walvissen en het beroemde vervelende tij, een enkele cruise naar Anchorage, Alaska, zal de bucketlist van elke natuurliefhebber aanzienlijk verkorten. Deze gastvrije oase, genesteld tussen de bergen en het eindpunt van Cook Inlet, in de buurt van vele nationale parken en staatsparken, is een van de beste plekken om wilde dieren in Alaska te zien. Een stads-eland die door de straten dwaalt (er zijn er ongeveer 1.500) is een regelmatig gezicht en uitzichten op walvissen, papegaaiduikers, otters en Dall-bruinvissen die hun dagen doorbrengen is slechts een korte excursie verwijderd. Anchorage is het hele jaar door een stad. Op sommige heldere, donkere nachten in de winter danst het noorderlicht boven. In het voorjaar bloeien duizenden bloemen die door de stad zijn geplant om de verwachte komst van het seizoen te vieren. De zomer brengt de middernachtzon waar de dagen kunnen oplopen tot 19 uur.

Aan een maar liefst 150 km lang fjord ligt het prachtige visserplaatsje Seward, één van de ouste plaatsjes van Alaska. Seward beschikt over een grote haven waar luxe cruiseschepen kunnen aanmeren. De meeste cruiseschepen hebben een shuttleverbinding tussen de haven en het centrum.
Het centrum bestaat eigenlijk uit 1 hoofdstraat waar verschillende winkeltjes zich bevinden. Seward dient als uitgangspunt voor wandelingen in de ongeschonden Chugach Mountains en naar hooggelegen ijsvelden, Harding Icefields.

“Zeelieden maakten zich zorgen dat men van de rand van de wereld zouden vallen. Ergens daar in de verte zou het allemaal gewoon ophouden en kon je alleen maar vallen. Maar wat als je hebt ontdekt dat je al bent gevallen en je nu probeert terug te komen? Dat is hoe zeilen richting de Hubbard-gletsjer voelt.
De gletsjer is65 meter (213 voet) breed aan de oppervlakte en 50 meter (164 voet) hoog, maar dat is slechts het kleinste stukje ijs: Het voornaamste kanaal van deze bevroren rivier begint 122 kilometer (76 mijl) verderop, wanneer het stroomt vanaf een hoogte van 3.400 meter (11.100 voet) op de helling van Mount Walsh.
Hubbard is de grootste vloedwatergletsjer (hetgeen betekent dat hij eindigt in de oceaan) in Noord-Amerika. Maar anders dan bijna alle andere vloedwatergletsjers op het continent gaat Hubbard vooruit en trekt zich niet terug; hij gaat steeds een stukje verder de baai in. Stukken ijs die afbreken worden rustplekken voor de zeehonden, die dol zijn op de ijsbergen omdat de sonar van de orka’s daar niet goed werken.
Het diepe blauw van het oppervlak van de gletsjer op een zonnige dag, de kleur veroorzaakt door het samenpersen van de ijskristallen die wel een voet of langer kunnen zijn, is het diepe blauw van de meest ver gelegen sterren. De gletsjer is in beweging.”

Icy Strait Point ligt op Baranof Eiland dichtbij Hoonah. Hier kunt u kennismaken met de Tlingit gemeenschap van Alaska. Deze Indianen laten u kennis maken met hun levenswijze en geschiedenis,
In dit gebied kunt u Grizzly beren bezichtigen vanaf een platform boven de Spasski rivier. De belangrijkste attractie is een historische visfabriek die tegenwoordig is omgebouwd tot restaurant. Hier kan niet alleen gegeten worden, maar er worden ook shows opgevoerd.
Tevens leven in dit gebied bruinvissen, orka’s, bultruggen, zeehonden, zeeotters, zalm en zeearenden.

Juneau is de hoofdstad van de Amerikaanse staat Alaska. Alaska is de 3de grootste staat. Juneau bestaat uit vele contrasten.Het is een zeer moderne stad temidden van het National Tongass Forest. Daarnaast ligt Juneau aan het begin van meters hoge bergen, welke de Gastineau Kanaal overschaduwen.

Skagway is een havenplaats gelegen in de staat Alaska (VS). Deze plaats werd gebouwd in 1897, tijdens de Klondike Goldrush. De plaats is bekend als plaats waar de goudzoekers aan land gingen, van criminelen en als startpunt van de White Pass & Yukon Route. De plaats wordt tegenwoordig voornamelijk bezocht door cruisetoeristen. Hierop is de plaats ook geheel op ingesteld. Het is de derde cruisehaven van Alaska.
Bezienswaardigheden:
De voornamelijke bezienswaardigheden, naast de overweldigende natuur van Alaska, zijn de overblijfselen van de Goldrush in 1897 en later. Diverse musea, woningen en winkels zijn ingericht op de toerist.
Tip: probeer een helikoptervlucht boven het indrukwekkende landschap te boeken.

Eén van de mooiste steden van Noord Amerika met veel bijzondere architectuur en gezellige terrasjes in de sfeervolle binnenstad. De ligging is prachtig: aan één kant de Stille Oceaan en aan de andere kant de met sneeuw bedekte bergen. Vancouver is de derde grootste stad van Canada. Het is de belangrijkste haven aan de Canadese westkust en een financieel en industrieel handelscentrum. Door het ontoegankelijke karakter van dit gebied duurde het tot eind 18de eeuw voordat het werd opengelegd. In eerste instantie waren het de Spanjaarden, later de Captains Cook en Vancouver, die de stad haar naam gaf. Het oude centrum van deze hoofdstad van British Columbia ademt nog een typisch Britse sfeer uit. Er zijn trolleytours in Vancouver.
